Castello Vicchiomaggio
Located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, the Castello Vicchiomaggio winery sits on a strategic hill overlooking the valley of the river Greve and the historic road linking Florence and Siena. The estate covers 140 hectares of which 34 are vineyards, 10 are olive trees, and the rest is forest. The castello dates back to Etruscan times (600 bc) when it would have been a fortification. Presently, the castle has a small medieval section (956 ad) and a largely Renaissance section (1540–1560 ad) built by the Gondi family, influential Florentine bankers at the time. It has been owned and run by the Matta family since 1964. Winemaker John Matta is supported by his wife and four children producing estate grown, single vineyard cru wines of superb quality.
